A bed that sleeps cooler, layer by layer
A hot bed is usually not the mattress being warm, it is the layers above it holding on to the warmth you produce anyway. Air that cannot move and moisture that cannot leave, those are the whole story, and both live in fabric you can change.
Where the heat sits
Your body warms the first few layers all night, that part is unavoidable. The difference between a cool bed and a swamp is what happens next: open weaves let the warm, damp air trade places with room air, while dense or coated layers trap it against your skin.
The fabric that helps
Rayon spun from bamboo is the workhorse of our cooler covers. The fiber pulls moisture along its length and spreads it wide, so it evaporates instead of sitting on you, and fabric that dries fast feels cool even in a warm room. Cotton terry runs warmer but still breathes; it is the honest middle option.
Fill and loft
In toppers, loose down alternative fill leaves air gaps between the clusters, and moving air is exactly what a hot sleeper needs. A freshly shaken topper sleeps cooler than the same topper packed flat, which is one more reason to fluff it when you change the sheets.
What to change first
Start at the top: a breathable pillow cover costs the least and sits closest to your face. Then the mattress protector, a thin knit with the membrane laminated to it, not a crinkly plastic sheet. The topper comes last and makes the biggest single difference on a dense foam mattress, which holds warmth more stubbornly than springs do.
